CC Regular Session
Meeting Date: 06/09/2020
By: Katie Schmidt, Administrative Services
Information
Title:
Adopt Resolution #20-117 Hiring Seasonal Public Works Maintenance Workers
5. 10.
Purpose/Background:
The purpose of this case is to request authorization to hire Seasonal Public Works Maintenance Workers. Annually,
the City employs Seasonal Public Works Maintenance Workers to perform work in the Parks, Streets, and Utilities
Divisions of Public Works. At this time, staff selected seven seasonal candidates to work in the Public Works
Department. It should be noted that, although the attached job description indicates the hiring range of $11.00 to
$12.00 per hour, the City Council approved a new wage scale of $13.00 to $15.00 per hour for seasonal employees,
including a .50 cent increase for each returning year.
Factors to be Noted
It should be noted that hourly pay within the approved range of $13.00 to $15.00 dollars per hour is based each
candidates previous years of service with the City or the candidates substantially comparable other past experience.
Effective dates when a candidate begins employment may vary. Onboarding of seasonal employees is time sensitive
due to high volume of work that needs to be done. Lastly, due to turnover and other factors, the number of seasonal
employees that are presented for hire each season is rarely the number of seasonal employees that are consecutively
actively working; Staff vigilantly monitors the budget to ensure proper funding.
Duties
Seasonal Public Works Maintenance workers provide general maintenance of streets, park grounds, trails, buildings,
and related facilities and equipment through the spring, summer, and possibly fall months. This also includes
mowing and trimming; pruning and planting trees or working on landscape projects; maintaining athletic fields;
picking up trash; street maintenance; and utilities maintenance.
Funding Source:
The funding required to fill these positions is included within the approved 2020 budget.
Recommendation:
Staff recommends hiring the following Seasonal Public Works Maintenance Workers: Gunnar Ledin, effective on
or near June 1, 2020 at $15.00 per hour; Emma Hoekman, effective on or near June 1, 2020 at $14.00 per hour;
Dane Jessen, Aaron Hallstrom, Thomas Pundy, and Thomas Leonard all effective on or near June 3, 2020 and all at
$13.00 per hour; and Nicole Harris, effective on or near June 10, 2020 at $13.00 per hour.
Action:
Motion to adopt resolution #20-117 to hire the following employees:
Seasonal Public Works Maintenance Workers: Gunnar Ledin, effective on or near June 1, 2020 at $15.00 per hour;
Emma Hoekman, effective on or near June 1, 2020 at $14.00 per hour; Dane Jessen, Aaron Hallstrom, Thomas
Pundy, and Thomas Leonard all effective on or near June 3, 2020 and all at $13.00 per hour; and Nicole Harris,
effective on or near June 10, 2020 at $13.00 per hour.
Attachments
