CASE # CONSIDER PLACEMENT OF PEDESTRIAN CROSSING SIGN AT POTASSIUM STREEET AND SUNWOOD DRIVE By: Steven J. Jankowski, City Engineer Background: Warning signs are to be used to call attention to unexpected conditions along roadways. Thc use of warning sigms should be kept to a minimum as the unnecessary use of signs tends to breed disrespect for all signs. Thc City has a sidewalk system which is not universal to all streets. In fact, along SLmxvood Drive between Nowthen Boulevard and Sunfish Lake Boulevard there is only a single location, the intersection with Potassium Street, where the sidewalk system requires the crossing of Sunwood Drive to continue travel along the sidewalk/trail system. Staff believes this unique feature warrants the posting of a Pedestrian Crossing sign to warn motorists that pedestrians crossing at this location are a more likely event than at other points along this segment of roadway. State law requires that motorists yield to pedestrians in marked crosswalks and this posting should provide an additional degree o1' protection to the trail system users. Thc cost associated with this signage is approximately $800 which would come from the public works signs account. Recommendation: Staff recommends that the Public Works Committee recommend to City Council that a Pedestrian Crossing sign be posted at the intersection of PotassiuTM Street and Sunwood Drive. Action: Motion to recommend to City Council that a Pedestrian Crossing sign be posted at the intersection of Potassium Street and Sunwood Drive.
