[ SUPPORT: ] These conflicts might be relatively confined, or might occur randomly over a segment of roadway. [OPTION: ] Crossing signs may be supplemented with supplemental plaques (see Section 2C.39) with the legend AHEAD, XX FEET, or NEXT XX MILES to provide advance notice to road users of crossing activity. When used at the crossing, Crossing sign shall be supple- mented with a diagonal downward pointing arrow plaque (W16-Tp) showing the location of the crossing Crossing signs shall be used where an established, multi-use trail crosses a roadway. OPTION: j · The crossing location may be defined with pavement markings (see Section 3B.17). A Wt6-7p supplemental plaque may be used with the crossing sign when crosswalk markings are provided. Pedestrian, Bicycle, School Advance Crossing, and School Crossing signs and their related supplemental plaques may have a fluorescent yellow-green background with a black legend and border. [ GUIDANCI~: ] When a fluorescent yellow-green background is used, a systematic approach featuring one background color within azone or area should be used. The mi:~ing of standard yellow and fluorescent yellow-green backgrounds within a selected site area should be avoided. Crossing signs should be used only at locations where the crossing activity is unexpected or at locations not readily apparent.
