Gunnar F. Unger Jr., ALA,
Architecture
❑ Education
North Dakota State University
Bachelor of Architecture — 1965
❑ Professional Organizations
American Institute of Architects
National Council of Architectural
Registration Boards
❑ Current Registration
Minnesota
Wisconsin
Illinois
New Jersey
South Dakota
Missouri
Mr. Unger is an architect with more than 40 years of experience on a variety of
building types including municipal, recreational, medical and commercial
facilities. He is experienced in all project stages, from early design through
project closeout.
Specifically, Gunnar is responsible for seeing that he or the project team
accomplishes the tasks associated with providing design services. Some of these
tasks include programming, space planning, schematic design, code
compliance, design development, project design, producing construction
documents, and general project and contract administration.
Gunnar has extensive experience managing projects of all types and sizes with
teams of two up to 20. He is responsible for project schedules and budgets, and
for coordinating work efforts with all project disciplines. Gunnar offers design
services in traditional design/bid/build format, design/build, or construction
management formats.
❑ Community Buildings
1. Cambridge, MN City Hall/Fire/Police Station — Gunnar served as project
manager on this combined services facility which involved retrofitting an
abandoned mall. The 30,000 square -foot facility allowed the City three
functions to be combined at a single location. Bonestroo provided all
architectural and engineering services for the retrofitted building.
► St. Cloud, MN, Eastman Park Community Building — Gunnar was the
architect for this project providing planning and design services to remodel the
former swimming pool/bath house into a facility for recreation offices, senior
and youth activities, and meeting rooms. Phase 2 was also planned to include
outdoor water features, picnic shelters, outdoor dining areas, and an outdoor
performance area.
► Farmington, MN, Community Center — The City is planning a new
recreation/community building to provide an activity center for this growing
community in south central, MN. Gunnar and the Bonestroo Recreation Group
worked with the City to program and price this S 15 million dollar facility and
also prepared schematic plan drawings. The facility would include a new
indoor pool, gymnasium, exercise/aerobic area, teen and senior facilities and
support spaces.
► St. James, MN, Watonwan County Multicultural Learning Center — This
new 12,000 sq. ft. library in downtown St. James replaced the existing smaller
and outdated library. The project will feature structural brick exterior in four
coordinated colors with large exposed wood trusses and wood deck roof
system on the interior. Gunnar was responsible for design detailing and
project management throughout construction.
► Chaska, MN, Public Works Expansion— The City is experiencing steady and
sustained growth and needed to plan an expansion of their public
works/utilities department facility on a site that is quite constrained. Gunnar
assisted the City in developing a master plan for the public works building,
originally deigned by Bonestroo, to accommodate a doubling of their current
facilities.
► St. Francis, MN City Hail/Police Station Space Needs Study — The City is
experiencing considerable growth and needs to construct permanent
facilities for their city hall and police station. Gunnar worked with the City to
complete a space needs study for the proposed 4.5 million dollar facility.
Gunnar met with representatives of the City to program their
spaces and representatives of the police station to program Bonestroo
their long-term needs.
