<br />3. Sherburne National Wildlife
<br />Refuge
<br />Sherbume National Wildlife Refuge,
<br />managed by the U.S. Fish and X,V'fldlife
<br />Service, encompasses 30,600 acres of
<br />land and provides excellent
<br />opportunities for wildhfe oriented
<br />recreation· The refuge has a gently
<br />rolling landscape with a mLx of tall
<br />grass prairie, oak savanna and wetland
<br />habitats.
<br />Bald eagles, sandhill cranes, ducks,
<br />geese and songbirds all nest in the
<br />Refuge and may be visible from the
<br />7.3 mile Wildlife Drive (entrance on
<br />County Road 5, txvo miles north of
<br />Orrock). The Blue Hill and
<br />Mahnomen Trails, located on County
<br />Road 9, provide 9 miles of good
<br />hiking and songbird viewing in the
<br />spring and fall, and cross-country
<br />skiing in the winter.

<br />Hwy 169 four miles north to County
<br />Road 9, then go west 5 miles to the
<br />refuge headquarters and hiking trails.

<br />HENNEPIN COUNTY:
<br />
<br />Hennepin County is located to the
<br />south of tL'tmsey and includes the
<br />township of Dayton. This county is
<br />
<br />on the south side of the Nhssissippi
<br />River. Currently, txvo existing bridge
<br />trail connections occur south of
<br />Ramsey and Hennepin County. One
<br />bridge crossing is between Anoka
<br />(Anoka County) and Champlin
<br />(Hennepin County). The other bridge
<br />crossing is located between Elk River
<br />(Sherburne County) and Otsego
<br />(Wright County). Future trail
<br />connections are proposed between
<br />Ramsey and Dayton.

<br />Three Rivers Park District, formerly
<br />Hennepin Parks, is a natural
<br />resources-based park system located
<br />in the suburban Minneapolis/St. Paul
<br />metro area of Minnesota that manages
<br />more than 27,000 acres of park
<br />reserves, regional parks, regional mails
<br />and special use facilities.

<br />The Park District offers year-round
<br />facilities including: three nature
<br />centers, four golf courses, a downhill
<br />ski area, extensive trails for hiking,
<br />b"d,:ing, horseback riding and cross-
<br />country skiing; and areas for camping,
<br />swimming, boating, picnicking,
<br />ice-skating, and sno~vshoeing.
