CASE #~,,

REVIEW PLACEMENT OF CHEVRONS AT THE CORNER OF
169TH AVENUE AND NEON STREET
By: Steven 3. Jankowski, City Engineer

Background:.

Last 'fall the City approved the posting of a series of chevron Warning markers at the
corner of 169th Avenue and Neon Street. This posting was the result of a request by the
resident at this corner (5866 169th Avenue) to remedy the problem of having vehicles
slide off the roadway and into his yard. Subsequent to the placement of these chevrons
there was a complaint regarding the aesthetics of these warning devices by Mr. Scott
Baumgartner who resides at 5850 169th Avenue (immediately east of the comer
property).

The Public Works Committee recommended at their November 16, 2004 meeting that
review of the situation be made at the May 2005 Public Works Committee meeting.
Notice that this agenda issue is being considered has been sent to both of the property
owners identified above.

Recoinmendation:

Since the posting of the chevrons the Police department has not received notice of
accidents at this location. A speed study performed subsequent to the placement of the
chevrons showed a slight decrease of 3 miles per hour in the average maximum speed.
The chevrons are a proper warning device and comply with.the recommendations for
their use as outlined in the Manual On Uniform Traffic Control Devices In Minnesota.
Staff therefore recommends that no further action be taken.

Action:

None required

Reviewed By:
Public Works Director/Fire Chief
Assistant Public Works Director/Principal Engineer
Public Works Street Supervisor
Police Chief

PW: 05/17/05
