A Special Election will occur on Tuesday, February 9, 2021 for residents that live in Ward 1. Ward 1 is located (generally) on the northeast side of the City. As background, Councilmember Nadine Heinrich, who represented the City in Ward 1, resigned from the Council, effective July 14, 2020. As a result of the vacancy in the Ward 1 office, and because more than 365 days remain in the term of the vacated office, pursuant to City Charter requirement, the City Council directed that a special election be held in Ward 1. The term of this office runs through January 2, 2023. Due to State Statutes dictating uniform election dates for Special Elections, the first authorized date for a Special Election is Tuesday, February 9, 2021. Candidates listed on the ballot are Ryan Heineman and Jane Covart. Ward 1 Voting / Absentee Voting Continues. Absentee voting for the Ward 1 Special Election continues through 5:00 p.m., Monday, February 8. Absentee Direct Balloting began on Tuesday, February 2, (7 days in advance of the Special Election) which allows the in person absentee voter to insert their ballot directly into the ballot counter. In addition, City Hall will be open Saturday, February 6, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for in person voting.
