Councilmember introduced the following resolution and moved for its adoption:
RESOLUTION #21-066
RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING APRIL 30, 2021 AS ARBOR DAY AND THE
MONTH OF MAY, 2021, AS ARBOR MONTH
WHEREAS, trees are an increasingly vital resource in Minnesota today and enrich
our lives by purifying air, soil and water; and
WHEREAS, trees help conserve and protect soil from erosive forces, moderate
temperatures, reduce stormwater runoff, and provide habitat for life of all kinds; and
WHEREAS, many species of trees and shrubs provide critical, early spring food
for pollinators; and
WHEREAS, trees provide beautiful recreational settings and promote personal,
community, and ecosystem health; and
WHEREAS, trees increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of
business areas, create jobs through forest products, and are a renewable resource; and
WHEREAS, activities such as construction damage, regional and distant source
pollution, as well as certain diseases and pests, threaten our trees, creating the need for
concerted adaptive and collaborative action by locally planting, nurturing and protecting
trees for the benefit of citizenry, economy, and ecology; and
WHEREAS, the City of Ramsey has been recognized for 29 consecutive years
(through 2020), as a Tree City USA; and
WHEERAS, due to the ongoing public health concerns regarding COVID-19, the
requirement to host an Arbor Day observance or event has been waived again for 2021.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF RAMSEY, ANOKA COUNTY, STATE OF MINNESOTA, as follows:
1) That the Ramsey City Council hereby proclaims April 30, 2021 as Arbor Day.
2) That the Ramsey City Council hereby proclaims the month of May as Arbor Month.
3) That the Ramsey City Council urges all citizens to plant trees as part of Ramsey's
living history, to participate in disease and pest control programs that will ensure
an enduring tree canopy, and collaborate with partners and volunteers to develop
and implement policies to plant, nurture, protect, and steward our natural diversity.
