PC CASE/4 / <br /> <br />AUTHORIZATION TO HIRE PAID ON-CALL FIRE FIGHTERS <br /> <br />By: Givonna Reed, Human Resources Manager <br /> <br />Background: <br /> <br />Due to understaffing, staff began a recruitment process to hire six additional paid on-call fire <br />fighters. Fire Fighter information sessions were held in May 2005 and interviews were <br />conducted in June 2005. Candidates were interviewed by a panel consisting of the Fire Chief, <br />both Assistant Fire Chiefs and the Human Resources Manager. Candidates took the physical <br />agility test the last week in June. <br /> <br />At this time staff is requesting authorization to offer employment to six individuals who would <br />· begin employment Wednesday, July 20, 2005. The six selected individuals, pending satisfactory <br />completion of all background and medical exams, will be named in a resolution that will be <br />presented to the City Council on July 26, 2005. <br /> <br />There are four additional individuals who are eligible for hire pending satisfactory background <br />checks and medical exams. Should any Fire Fighter positions become-vacant in the next '12 <br />months, staff would like authorization to bring a resolution forward hiring additional Fire <br />Fighters from the existing eligibility list, rather than conducting another recruitmentl <br /> <br />Staff Recommendation: <br />Staff is recommending that the Personnel Committee grant authorization to hire six Fire Fightdrs. <br />These individuals would be hired at an hourly wage of $12.50-and would begin employment on <br />or after July 20, 2005. The names of the selected candidates will be presented for ratification at <br />the Personnel Committee meeting the evening of July 26, 2005. <br /> <br />Staff. further recommends that authorization be granted to hire from an'existing eligibility list <br />should Fire Fighter positions become vacant in the next 12 months. <br /> <br />Committee Action: <br />Motion recommending that staff be granted authorization to hire six Fire Fighters. from These <br />individuals would be hired at an hourly wage of $12.50 and would begin employment on or after <br />July 20, 2005. The names of the selected candidates will be presented for ratification at the <br />Personnel Committee meeting the evening of July 26, 2005. These appointments will be <br />contingent upon successful completion of criminal and driver's license background checks, <br />reference checks, and passing a pre-employment physical and drug screen. <br /> <br />The Personnel Committee further recommends that authorization be granted to hire from an <br />existing eligibility list should Fire Fighter positions become vacant in the next 12 months. <br /> <br />PC: 07-12-05 <br /> <br />-343- <br /> <br /> <br />
