KJOLHAUG ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES COMPANY
islikimillftwie
Memorandum
Providing Sound, Balanced, Comprehensive Natural Resource Solutions
Date: January 27, 2021
To: The City of Afton, MN
CC: Rick Packer, Gonyea Companies
From: Kyle Uhler, Kjolhaug Environmental Services Company (KES)
Re: Site Tree Survey Methods — Saint Joseph Pines, 680 Neal Ave South, Afton, MN
(KES#202 1-180)
The Saint Joseph Pines development was surveyed for the presence and extent of significant
trees as defined by the City of Afton, MN Code of Ordinances Sec. 10-121. The site was located
in Section 6, Township 28N, Range 20W, City of Afton, Washington County, Minnesota.
Generally, the site was located south of Interstate 94 and east of Neal Avenue South. The site
boundaries corresponded to Washington County PID: 0602820410002 (Figure 1).
The 40.76-acre site was comprised of open fields, wetlands, existing structures, and
approximately 22.36 acres of trees grouped into three large continuous areas of planted
woodland. The purpose of this memo is to explain the tree survey results. The woodland was
divided into two tree areas, Tree Area 1 ('17.25-ac) and Tree Area 2 (5.17-ac), based on aerial
canopy similarities. The division of the woodland into similar canopy groupings allowed the
subsampling method to more accurately projected tree Basal Area (BA) for each grouping. For
the proposed survey methods see attached Tree Survey Methods Memo in Appendix A.
Tree Survey Results Overview
• 22.36 acres of woodland onsite.
• All significant trees impacted by primary and secondary construction zones were sampled
(Figure 2A-2F). Additional 2.22 acres were sample within 23, 1 /loth-ac plots.
• Total —7.59 acres of woodland were sampled.
• 2349 significant trees sampled. Data located in Appendix B.
• The site had a sampled diversity of 24 different species, of which —91 % of the trees
sampled were either red pine, white pine, or white spruce (Table 1, on following page).
• Sample plots projected a site total tree BA of 3790.78 sqft (Table 2, on the following
page) and the total tree BA impacted equaled 889.66 sqft, or 23.47% of total projected
BA on -site.
2500 Shadywood Road, Suite 130, Orono, MN Phone: 952-401-8757
