CASE # 6

Titterud Park Playground Replacement
By: Mark Riverblood, Parks and Utilities Supervisor

Background:

The purpose of this case is have the Commission .formally recommend that the play
equipment at Titterud Park be replaced, and discuss the process and timeline. The.
project is shown as a 2005 CIP project at $55,000.- This project had not been' actively'
worked on - pending the completion of the play area at Alpine Park.

As the Commission is aware, the City has had a regular program of replacing these
structures with contemporary Ones that meet Consumer Product Safety Commission
guidelines, as well as ADA rules.

Observations:

The following questions should' be addressed by the Commission as part of the process
leading to City Council authorization of the project:

, Should the'City Continue with wood structures?
· Should the Play area and equipment be integrated into the landscape (as in the
case of Alpine Park's Discovery Garden)?
· Should there be interpretive elements for families - to compliment the play
elements?
· Is there a desire for uniqueness to distinguish Titterud's playground from others
in the area?
· Should entry signage be included as part of this project?

Upon learning the Commission's recommendations on the above questions, an
appropriate recommendation may be made to the Finance Committee, then to City
Council for approval. Staff is recommending that the planning and design work (as
may be necessary, depending on the scope of the project), occur in the late fall, with
bids received in the winter, for spring installation. City Council would declare the
used equipment presently at Titterud surplus property at the time bids are approved for
the new play equipment.

Commission Action:

Based upon discussion.

P&R: 08/11/05

49
