CC Regular Session 5, 7, Meeting Date: 09/14/2021 By: Colleen Lasher, Administrative Services Information Title: Authorize Hiring a Planning Intern Purpose/Background: The purpose of this case is to request authorization to hire one Planning Intern. Annually the City employs interns to work in Administrative Services, Community Development, and Engineering. The 2021 budget includes funding for the Planning Intern. The recruitment for this internship was delayed due to numerous reasons, including the Community Development Director leaving the City, allowing prioritization of other recruitments, and ensuring that there is adequate workload and staff time available to support the Intern. The Planning Intern assists staff with multiple ongoing City functions, projects and events including a variety of land use planning and zoning administration activities, processing applications for conditional use permits and enforcement of sign regulations, along with attending the monthly Planning Commission meetings, selected Environmental Policy Board meetings and various public workshops. The process to fill this internship includes an open competitive recruitment, interviews, background checks, pre -employment testing, City Council approval to hire and on -boarding. At this time, staff selected one Planning Intern. The candidate has passed the pre -employment screenings and staff recommends hiring the candidate listed below. Notification: Intern pay: The intern pay scale ranges from $13.00 per hour to $18.00 per hour, depending on qualifications. Funding Source: The funding required to fill this position is included within the approved 2021 budget. Recommendation: Staff recommends hiring Grady Timmerman, effective on or near September 15, 2021 at $14.00 per hour.
