CASE # 3

Amoco Demolition
By: Scan M. Sullivan, Economic Development / TIF Specialist

B ackgr o n n ti:

At thc July 13, 2005 EDA meeting discussion involving the acquisition and demolition of the
Amoco station on Hwy 47 took place. The suggestion by the EDA was to look at the look at the
interest of' a public demolition of the building after acquisition. The intention of the public
demolition would serve as a promotion of the "Community Revitalization Program" as well as
marketing fbr the development of city owned land.

Observations:

Stat¥ has inl'ormally polled members at the council and staff levels regarding the interest in
having a public demolition of the Amoco station. The response has been overwhelmingly in
t'aw)r o1' having some sort of public demolition. A public demolition brings many logistical
questions to the fbrefront. Here are a number of items the EDA needs tO consider regarding the
0ublic demolition:

l. I)atc and Time
2. Wrecking Bali/Bulldozer
3. Actual Demolition / Ceremonial Demolition
4. Public Speaker (Community Revitalization/Marketing new opportunities)
5. Number in attendance
6. Food
7. l,ocation (onsite, adjacent sites)
8. 'l'ents
9. I Jability
10. }:trading Mechanism

It is apparent that this small "production" will require many logistical decisions to be made. The
k;l)A should give staff specific information as to how the event should be planned and to be clear
o~ thc expectations of staff for the event.

Reco mm endation:

Staff recommends that a public demolition of the Amoco be held to promote the "Community
Revitalization Project".

EI)A Action:

Discussion

Review Checklist:

City Administrator, Jim Norman

EDA: 09.08.04

P17
