Working in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration, the city of
Madison and MnDOT, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation installed truncated
domes on curb ramps at eleven sites in the city of Madison, Wisconsin in the fall of 2002~
In the spring of 2003, the various truncated dome products were evaluated for
constructability, durability, aesthetics, cost and compliance with the ADA. As a result of
this study, only inset truncated dome systems were approved. The report, issued in
November 2003, is available on the Wisconsin Department of Transportation website at
httl~ ://www.dot.wis co nsin .gov/lib r arv/research/reports/safet¥.htm.

Accordingly, MnDOT currently does not allow surface applied truncated domes or
sram pod concrete dome products in Minnesota. There are four types of inset truncated
dome products on MnDOT's approved products list available at
www.mrr.dot.state, mn.us/material/materials.asp. All MnDOT, state aid or federal aid
projects must use truncated dome products from this list.

Where can I get more information on detectable warnings?

In addition to the sources cited previously, an article entitled "Testing Truncated Domes"
by Mark Chandler'is available from the Federal Highway Administration website at
http://www.tfl~rc.gov/pubrds/O4sep/index.htm.
