q

Revisions to Firearms Ordinance
By Chief Jim Way

Background:

Sta/'t' recently received a letter from a Ramsey resident requesting that changes be considered to
Ih e existing firearms ordinance regarding bow hunting (see attached letter). Staff researched the
requests made in the letter and a topic was covered at the September 6, 2006 Work Session.

Also discussed at the Work Session was reference to the 1,500 foot distance from structures as it
relates 1o firearms. It appears that the distance was inadvertently changed from 500 feet to 1,500
t'ect sometime after its original passage in 1973.

Rccom~nendation:

Staff recommends amending the existing permitted bow and arrow hunting distance from 300
yards to 500 feet fi:om any residential structure, commercial structure, park, or playground.
Additionally, for the ease of enforcement, staff recommends amending the distance from 150
yards to 500 feet from any trunk highway.

Staff als() recommends the 1500 foot distance as it relates to firearms be officially adopted into
(,rdinancc.

Council Action:

Motion by City Council to introduce the ordinance amending City Code 5.07 Firearms.

Reviewed by:

(~hicfJim Way
City Altorney Bill Goodrich
(iity Administrator
