MAYOR, COUNCIL AND STAFF INPUT 1) Coborn's Grand Opening: Mayor Gamec announced the Grand Opening Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Coborn's at 9:00 a.m., tomorrow morning (September 28, 2005) 2) Warning Sirens: Councilmember Elvig expressed concern with the length of time it took Ik)r the emergency sirens in the City to be activated during the severe weather on Weclncsday. Px~blic Works Director Kapler replied he contacted the Manager of Central Communications for Anoka County, John Tonding, regarding these concerns. Mr. Tonding informed him one of the Ibllowi~]g criteria must be met to activate the civil defense siren: · A tornado warning issued by the National Weather Service for an area within Anoka County · l ligh wind warning · Reliable spotter report Public Works Director Kapler advised in the case of the storm on Wednesday, Central Communications began receiving calls about the severe damage when the storm got to Andover. C(n~trat Communications then called the National Weather Service, who at that point in time said Anoka County was being raised to a tornado warning. The sirens were activated again about 30 minutes later when the National Weather Service indicated there was a second cell. Mr. Tonding has said he would be more than happy to attend a Council meeting or work session to answer q~cstions of the Council. Councihncmber Elvig stated the sirens did not go off at a proper timeframe for the residents of Ramscy. If Anoka County has to get hit by weather for the sirens to go off, Ramsey will always face this issue because they are at the leading edge of weather. He would like to discuss this issue I'm'thor at a work session. Mayor (}amcc indicated this issue was brought up by the mayors in the area during a conference calf with thc Governor's office today.
