NEWS & INFORMATION
UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA
NEWS RELEASE
Media Contact: Lia Spaniolo, Program Coordinator, Anoka County Master Gardeners,
University of Minnesota Extension.`.9savaeduu, 763-324-3498
Anoka County Master Gardeners to sell plants to the public as annual
fundraiser and educational event.
ANDOVER, Minn. (April 14, 2022)—As the weather wainis and rain become more frequent than snow,
many of us are eager to get to work on our yards, gardens and patios. This May, the Anoka County
Extension Master Gardeners will host a public Plant Sale and offer healthy, locally grown plants and
provide planting tips for shoppers. People will be able to choose from hundreds of varieties of native
plants, sun and shade perennials, annuals, vegetables, flowers for pollinators and more.
The Plant Sale will be held at the Anoka County Fairgrounds in Anoka and is open to the public on
Tuesday, May 17 from 2pm — 7pm and Wednesday, May 18 from 9am — 1pm. Cash, credit cards and
checks will be accepted. In a new feature to this year's event, shoppers can purchase any remaining plants
up to 50% off original prices during a "Last Chance Sale" on May 18th only from 2 — 4pm. The event
organizers caution that US Hwy 10 is currently undergoing extended construction projects, and drivers
should allow extra time and care when coming to the event. Visit www.5 1 lmn.org to learn updates.
As a program of the University of Minnesota Extension, Master Gardeners serve to educate, making sure
people know how to care for the plants they purchase so they not only survive, but thrive. Volunteer event
organizers, who are also Anoka County Master Gardeners, take great care in selecting the right plant
varieties for our regional climate in Minnesota and that benefit locally adapted pollinator insects. "It's so
important we provide the right kinds of plants that our native insects and birds can use for food and
habitat, "said Eva Knudsen, Anoka County Master Gardener and event planner. "Without them, the entire
food web doesn't work, and that includes food for people."
The Plant Sale also serves as an annual fundraiser for the Anoka County volunteer program. Profits raised
at the sale are put back into Master Gardener volunteer activities and projects. One of these projects, "Ask
a Master Gardener Online", offers the public an ongoing method for connecting with Anoka County
Master Gardeners this season. People can join weekly online sessions and ask Master Gardeners any yard
or garden question under the sun to learn research -based advice and infoiivation. Sessions are free to the
public and will be held every Tuesday from 6:30-7:30pm, May — August. Pre -registration is required.
Visit www.anokamastergardeners.org/ask-a-master-gardener to register.
The mission of the University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Program is to use
research -based horticultural knowledge and practices to deliver educational outreach and project -based
efforts that inspire change and promote healthy people, healthy communities and a healthy planet.
Plant Sale: Tuesday, May 17th, 3 — 7pm & Wednesday, May 18th, 9am — 1pm at the Anoka County
Fairgrounds, 3200 St Francis Blvd NW, Anoka, MN 55303.
