Case #

CONSIDER REQUEST TO REMOVE DRAINAGE POND AT 5907 151sT LANE
By Seven Jankowski, City Engineer

l~ackground:

Attached to this case is an October 7, 2005 from Karla Weiss requesting the'removal of a
storm water drainage pond from her property located at 5907 151st Lane. Mrs. Weiss is
concerned about the presence of the p.ond as a potential safety hazard. A location map has
also been attached which illustrates her property, the pond, and nearby wetland to which
Mrs, Weiss would like the drainage redirected.

This pond has been a part of the drainage plan for the area since being-developed in 1989
as a part of the Haubrich subdivision. The ponding area is covered with a drainage and
utility easement. The City currently has approximately 90 such ponds in place to receive
atqd treat storm water prior to discharge to natural wetlands and streams.

Recommendation:

Staff recommends denial of this request. This pond represents no greater safety hazard
than any of the other storm water detention ponds located throughout the city. The
removal of the pond would be a considerable expense. The drainage and utility easement
would still likely be required in the event the water level in the wetland would rise in. the
ew:nt of flooding.

Action:

Motion to recommend to the city council denial of the request to remove the existing
drainage pond.

Reviewed by

Brian
Grant
