Chapter 7
Other Design Considerations
Year-Round Interest
A goal of many projects is to provide year-round visual interest. This can be challenging
because prairie plants typically bloom in midsummer, while most woodland species bloom in
the spring. Nevertheless, it is possible to find species that bloom at other times of the year or
sport eye-catching foliage or fruit. For example, prairie plants such as pasque flower, golden
Alexanders, prairie smoke, prairie phlox and spiderwort bloom early in the season. In wood-
land plantings, year-round interest can be achieved by selecting plants that either keep their
foliage all year or bloom later in the season. Examples are wild geranium, ferns, goldenrods,
asters and various types of sedges and grasses.
Functional Requirements
Functional requirements of a site include erosion control, stormwater filtering, soil remedia-
tion and the creation of wildlife habitat. There are many good reference materials on these
topics (see reference list).
Pasque Flower ` 1
(Anemone Patens) -
Rain Garden -
designed by URS -
ON.IN
e -
-.r .
Nod
45
