Focus on the Environment
White Sage (Artemesia ludoviciana)
If you are out and about for a walk on our City's many beautiful trails, you may catch
the scent of sage wafting through the air. This is a beautiful plant found in prairies in Min-
nesota and goes by many names:white sage, prairie sage and white sagebrush,to name
a few.You will know this plant by the silvery green leaves, with a thick coating of white
hairs and clusters of tiny green (closed) or yellow(open) flowers.White sage typically
grows to be two to three feet tall and grows in full sun and open areas. The leaves are very
aromatic when rubbed or crushed.
White sage is a favorite of native perennial garden owners because it needs next to
no water or upkeep once established, and has a pleasant aroma. Indigenous people of Photo credit:K.chayka and Peter M.
our region used this plant for a meat preservative,as horse feed or as an insect repellent (by DZiuk-www.minnesotawildflowers.info
burning the plant). The plant is said to have medicinal properties as well, with uses ranging
from cold remedies, alleviating headaches, coughing, lung ailments or even toothaches (these are not medically proven
and should not be tried at home).White sage was also used by the Dakota Sioux ceremoniously to ward off evil spirits or
to restore oneself to normal status after touching a sacred object or breaking a taboo.Take a moment to enjoy the histor-
ical significance of this lovely plant next time you spot it growing in the wild.
Odd/Even Sprinkling Ban Now in Effect
To reduce peak water usage in areas served by the mu- This minimizes evaporation and lessens peak demand on
nicipal water system, the City of Ramsey has implemented the system.
an odd/even day sprinkling ban, pursuant to City Code The only exception to the code is that new sod or
58-118.The sprinkling ban will be in effect from May 31 seeded areas may be watered every day for two weeks to
until September 6. establish root growth but not between 10:00 am and 8:00
Residents may water on odd numbered days if their pm,
address ends in an odd number and on even numbered .
