Other
non-destructive training opportunities were also provided for numerous fire department personnel prior to June 29th.
The resulting debris and building foundation materials must now be removed, hauled off site, and disposed of in a
special landfill due to the presence of asbestos and other materials not allowed in general household landfills. The
foundation area must also be filled with suitable material and must then be compacted. Topsoil must then be placed
on all disturbed areas, and seed must be spread to establish turf.
Staff solicited quotes to complete this work in as timely a manner as possible per the request of the original
homeowners.
Notification:
Notifications are not required for this case.
Observations/Alternatives:
Real-life training opportunities prove to be extremely valuable for fire department personnel. This home needed to
be removed for Riverdale Drive to be constructed as part of Improvement Project#20-05, which is currently out for
bids and is proposed to be constructed later this summer with completion scheduled in October. Therefore, burning
this home not only provided valuable training for fire department personnel, it also reduced overall project costs by
removing structure demolition costs.
Funding Source:
Two quotes were received per Staffs request. The first quote was received from Sauter and Sons, Inc. in the amount
of$15,000. The second quote received was from Douglas-Kerr Underground,LLC in the amount of$9,800.
Douglas-Kerr Underground, LLC is the City's contractor for Improvement Project#22-05. Staff confirmed that both
quotes include the same work takes, including placing topsoil and seed to establish turf.
Upon receiving Minnesota Department of Transportation approval of Change Order#3 as anticipated, Municipal
State Aid funds will be eligible for this work and will be used to pay for the work.
Recommendation:
