Staff has introduced an amendment reducing the permitted bow and
arrow hunting distance from 300 yards to 500 feet from any residential structure, park, or
playgound. Additionally, for the ease of enforcement, the distance from any trunk highway is
being amended from 150 yards to 500 feet. In addition, the distance from structures as it relates
to firearms appears to have been inadvertently changed from 500 feet to 1,500 feet sometime
after its original passage in 1973, and should be officially adopted into ordinance. The ordinance
was introduced by the Council and is now ready for adoption.

Councilmember Elvig stated he would suggest one change to the ordinance, which would be to
change the limitation on the shot discharge to be no larger than six, rather than no larger than
four, and that the bullet be steel.

Councilmember Cook suggested the limitation be listed as non-lead, as there are other products
available that do not.have the poison aspect to the environment, such as bismuth.

Motion by Councilmember Elvig, seconded by Councilmember Jeffrey, to adopt Ordinance #05-
26 .amending City Code 5.07 Firearms with the following amendment to Subsection 5.07.07:
"...In addition, shotguns using no larger than size (~4x-¢-) six (6) non-lead shot..."

A roll call vote was performed by the Recording Secretary:

Mayor Gamec: aye
Councilmember Cook: aye
Councilmember Elvig: aye
Councilmember Jeffrey: aye
Councilmember Olson: aye
Councilmember Pearson: aye
Councilmember Strommen: aye

P34

City Council / October 11, 2005
