Case #

CONSIDER REQUEST TO I:LEMOVE Di:L,4,INAGE POND AT 5907 151sT LANE
By Seven Jankowski, Cit3, Engineer

B:,ckground:

At[ached to this case is an October 7, 2005 from Karla Weiss requesting the removal of a
storm water drainage pond from her property located at 5907 151st Lane. Mrs. Weiss is
concerned about the ?resence of the pond as a potential safety hazard. A location map has
ak;o been attached which illustrates her property, the pond, and nearby wetland to wi'fi.ch
Mrs. W~eiss would like the drainage redirected.

This pond has been a part of the drainage plan for the area since being'developed in 1989
as a pan of the Haubrich subdivision. The ponding area is covered with a drainage and
urili, ty easement. The City currently has approximately 90 such ponds in place to receive
and treat storm water prior to discharge to nataral wetlands and streams.

Recommendation:

Staff recommends denial of this request. This pond represents no greater safety hazard
dxan any of the other storm water detention ponds located throughout the city. The
removal of the pond would be a considerable expense. The drainage and utility easement
wouid still likely be required in the event the water level in the wetland would rise in. the
event of flooding.

Action:

Motion to recommend to the city. council denial of the request to remove the existing
drainage pond.

Reviewed by:

P, ri an
