CASE STUDY

Multimodal stations

Multimode

Minnesota

Communities are realizing that investment in strategically placed transit
stations produces a high return in the form of a positive influence On the
surrounding area and future redevelopment

I]o Ann Ols~

Hubbard Marketplace preliminary design showing the Metro Transit 'S' curve and shelters

rot Palm
\

Hubbard Marketplace final design

It takes creative ideas to blend transit
systems and facilities within the con-
fines of a developed area. By imple-
menting an inclusive decision-making
process, multiple sources of funding and,
most importantly, a site-selection process
that responds to the community, transit
facilities can be designed to preserve and
enhance the urban fabric of the area.
Hubbard Marketplace in Robbinsdate,
Minnesota, and Uptown Transit Station
m Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, are
examples of transit investmenu that blend
with and enhanced existing conditions.
Robbinsdale is a bedroom community
actively redeveloping areas of its dkstinct
downtow'a, and Uptown is a thriving
retail/residential area of Minneapolis.
Multimodal transit stations ;vere proposed
at both sites and LSA Design was com-
missioned as the landscape design, archi-
tecture and planning consultant, charged
with integrating transit facilities into
these communities. The projects maintain
the viability of the area and are being
used as examples for other multimodal
transit facilities.

Site selection
The most crkical component to these pro-
jects was the selection of a site that had a
positive effect on the community and best
met the goals of the stakeholders.
Robbinsdale is active in redeveloping its
downtown area, The site selection in th/s
case had to enhance the redevelopment
potential. Uptown is a v/brant and com-
pletely developed area and the site selec-
tion in this case had to result in minimum
displacement and no loss of value to exist-
ing development.

Hubbard Marketplace
LSA Design initially interviewed sur-
rounding businesses, the Robbinsdale City
Council and Robbinsc!ale Economic
Development Agency, and worked w/th
transit provider Metro Transit to deter-
mine needs and concerns.
