Canopy Cover Formula
1. Determine the square footage of the entire site
2. Determine the square footage of the impervious area
3. Determine the square footage of the pervious area
4. Determine the ratio between impervious area to entire site
(R = impervious area/entire site)
5. Multiply the ratio (R) by the square footage of the pervious area to calculate the required
canopy cover square footage
Crown Cover (Canopy Cover) for a species is determined by the following formula:
(((min. + max spread) / 4)2) * TC (pi) * (0.65 for preferred or 0.5 for acceptable species)
The formula determines the average spread of a species and then divides it by 2 to get the radius
(these steps are combined and that is why it shows as divided by 4). Then, the area of a circle
(the canopy cover) is calculated, which is pi * r2. This is then multiplied by a designated factor
(depending on if the species is preferred or acceptable, with preferred species being credited with
a higher canopy cover thus the 0.65 instead of 0.5) which determines the canopy cover a
particular species receives credit for.
To fulfill the planting requirements, a combination of trees and shrubs shall meet or exceed the
minimum required canopy cover square footage.
