The cost estimates vary depending on the amount of time estimated to do the design and the
amount of assistance required to utilize the design on letterhead, business cards, water towers and
pins. Council is being asked to select an artist whose work exhibits a style that will culminate in
a logo design that will be unique to the City of Ramsey. Staff recommends that the City Council
approve selection of Tom O'Brien as the artist to redesign the City's logo. Mr. O'Brien's
submittal is consistent with the City's criteria for design and within budget for the project.

Councilmember Anderson stated she does not know what she was expecting, but these are not at
all what she had in mind for the City of Ramsey. She noted the same letter was sent to the
companies, but several different responses were received. She added it is difficult to compare
figures, because they do not cover the same items. She stated the Marie Moreland design appeals
to her. She noted it has oak trees, wetlands, and cattails. She noted some of the designs do not
have the depth or feel for Ramsey. She asked how would one find someone to do that. She
added she does not see it here.

Councilmember Zimmerman stated he is not impressed with any of them.

Councilmember Anderson stated that maybe the water tower is a different case. She noted that
perhaps one logo is needed for the water tower and a different one for letterhead.

Councilmember Connolly suggested the Council table the issue and have a discussion on what it
wants.

Mayor Gamec stated the Council is just selecting an artist at this time, not a design.

City Administrator Norman stated the current logo is too busy and would not be seen on a tower.

Mr. Dan Verdick, from Laurie Ingram Duren, stated there was a call for a proposal. He noted the
firms submitted work as examples. He added the firms would work with the Council on the
actual design to make it work. He stated they did a lot of research. He noted that in graphic
design often you do not know what you want until you see it. He added a design represents a
feeling and graphic design is a process.

Mayor Gamec stated the Council should decide on which artist to work with. He asked which
artist they think is the best.

Councilmember Connolly asked if there is any reason this needs to be decided now.

City Administrator Norman stated the Council could hold a work session.

Mayor Gamec stated the consultants have just given the Council an idea on the cost, not the
design. He noted samples were given, but the Council has not yet worked with any of the artists.

City Council/May 23, 2000
