PC CASE

CONSIDER AUTHORIZING A TEMPORARY REDUCTION IN
HOURS FOR THE FULL-TIME REGULAR ASSOCIATE PLANNER

By: Givonna Reed, Human Resources Manager

Background:
Amy Geisler, full-time regular Associate Planner, is currently on a leave of absence and
is scheduled to remm to work on February 27, 2006. Ms. Geisler has requested a
reduction in hours from 40 hours per week to 24 hours per week for the period of
February 27t~ through June 1st. After June lSt, Ms. Geisler will resume full-time hours.
This issue is being brought to the City Council for discussion and consideration because
the City does not have a policy for reducing hours based on a request from an employee.
Staff has discussed tiffs matter with the Community Development Director and A~sistant
Director and they believe that the department can cover the workload for a temporary
period, if this request is approved.
From a benefits perspective, if this request for a reduction in hours is approved,
Ms. Geisler will be paid only for hours worked and she will be entitled to the same
benefits that are offered to other part-time employees. She will accrue paid leave (sick,
vacation and holidays) based on her 24 hour per week schedule. The City will not
provide a contribution for health and basic life insurance

Staff Recommendation:
Consider authorizing the Associate Planner, Amy Geisler, to work a part-time schedule
February 27, 2006 through June 1, 2006.

Committee Action:

Based on the discussion.

PC: 2-14-06

G:~Adrninistration~HumanRcsources~Leave~Leave of Absence\Geisler 2006~Geisler-reduction in houra.doc
-301-
