At the Happy Days festival in September, residents were asked for
their suggestions for a new street name. Staff received approximately 30 suggestions, which
were submitted to the Council for their consideration. They selected five and asked that staff be
surveyed for their choice from those five. Surveys listing the five choices went out to all City
departments asking that each proposed street name be ranked and returned to the Assistant City
Administrator by November 13, 2000. The Assistant City Administrator received 37 responses
from 54 City employees. The staff selected "Alpine" as their favorite name for 153/155 Avenue.
There was also a suggestion that "Drive" should be changed to "Parkway" because the roadway
runs adjacent to Alpine Park. Lake Itasca Drive came in as second; Municipal Center Drive
third; Thorn Drive fourth; and Pearson Drive fifth.

Councihnember Colmolly stated that she would prefer Alpine Drive so that "Drives" are going in
one direction and "Boulevards" in another.

City Attorney Goodrich noted that the name change would require an ordinance so at this point
all they are doing is selecting a name and directing staff to put together an ordinance for
introduction.

Mayor Gamec stated that there has been some concern from residents on how the address change
will be handled and inquired if the City will handle that change or does the post office or resident
have to do it.

City Administrator Norn~an replied that staff will research that information and bring it back.

City Council/November 28, 2000
