CASE #1

REPAIR OF PUMP FOR WELL #3
By: John Nelson, Public Works Utilities Lead Person

Background:

Constructed in 1997, Well #3, which produces about 1600 gpm is the largest water
producing well in Ramsey. Recently it was observed that during start-up the 125 hp
motor seemed to labor excessively for approximately 30 seconds before operating speed
was obtained. Staff had an electrician test the draw amperage the pump motor was
pulling and found rather than the expected 200 amps and actual pull of 420 amps.

Staff contacted EH Rermer and explained the problem. A service technician made a field
analysis and determined that bearing failure and impeller drag may cause the excessive
amperage pull. The technician also commented that it's common for a well pump which
produces the volume of water such as well #3 has for 8 years to have these types of
repairs needed.

Staff asked for a worst case estimate for repairs. That estimate totals $18,772 (enclosed).

Funding:

As part of the water utility, this repair would be charged to enterprise fund #9601 and
cost center 6315 (Professional Services). 2006 budget has $60,000 in this line item.

Staff Recommendation:

Contract EH Renner to make repairs to Well Pump #3 at a cost not to exceed $19,000.

Committee Action:

Motion to accept/reject Staff's recommendation and forward to City Council for
approval.

Reviewed By:
City Administrator
Finance Director
Asst PW Director
Public Works Utilities Leadperson

PW: 2/21/2006
