May 6, 1980
The Mayor and City Council
Economic Development Committee
City of Ramsey
15153 Nowthen Boulevard
Ramsey, Minnesota 55303
Gentlemen:
This is a report from the Housing Subcommittee for the Economic Development
4111 Committee on their meeting held May, 5, 1980 at 7:00 P.M. at 6740 Highway #10
NW, Anoka, Minnesota. - • The Committee, consisting of Joseph Sentyrz, Roger Meyer,
Jim Gilbertson, Al Soteberg and Richard Carson, discussed the urgent need for a
revision as to the minimum housing sizes and garage requirements in the City of
Ramsey It is our recommendation that the Economic Development Committee ask •
the City Council for the following changes regarding housing:
1 Ramblers - 960 square feet on the main floor - no garage required;
2 Split foyers and split entries - 850 square feet on the main floor - no
garage required;
3. 2 story houses- 500 square'feet on the first floor and. 500 square feet
finished on the second floor - no garage required.
It the Committee's belief - that - -a lowering of the minimum house sizes and de -
letion of garages - at.this time should increase housing in our community today.
Because of the outlook.on - financing, both conventional and government mortgages,
we feel that the above sized homes are needed to create a reasonable price for
•
the average homeowner in todays market. We do not feel that this should cause
any burden for anyone residing in the City. It is our intent not to create
housing which will tend to become blight areas for our community. Many existing
plats will be able to maintain their status quo through present ownership which
will set their own standards.
Our Committee also discussed the possibilities - of building twin homes or - double
bungalows on existing lots in our city.' It is our recommendation that any future
plats should allow these twin homes or doubles to be built on no more than 20% of
the lots with an alternation of at least two single family homes being built be-
tween each double or twin home. . For the existing plats now of record, we suggest that
the City allow twin homes to be:built and approved by the City through the'applica-
tion of a variance for each home.
