Mr. Jankowski advised staff recommends <br />that staff be directed to modify the existing street lighting policy to include a description of the <br />process for installing lights in preexisting areas of the City based upon comments of the Public <br />Works Committee. <br /> <br />Councilmember Cook suggested the subdivision lighting be handled like any other <br />improvements; assessed 100% with 35% neighborhood support required to authorize a feasibility <br />study. He stressed getting information to the developers to install the lighting if they want it <br />included in their subdivision. <br /> <br />Assistant Public Works Director Olson replied installation of lighting is currently required ~vith <br />new subdivisions. <br /> <br />Chairperson Elvig noted there may be a continued backfill of lighting, as currently there are <br />alternating neighborhoods with lights and without. <br /> <br />Councilmember Cook suggested when other improvement projects are requested the residents be <br />informed it would be cheaper to petition for lighting to be installed at the same time. <br /> <br />Chairperson Elvig inquired if the City currently has a streetlight standard. <br /> <br />Assistant Public Works Director Olson replied a standard has been designated with Town Center. <br />He indicated Alpine Acres and Village at Sunfish Lake have asked to install a different type of <br />light. <br /> <br />Chairperson Elvig commented lights facing access roads throughout the City should be <br />standardized. He questioned where it would be designated for the standardized lights to begin <br />and end. <br /> <br />City Engineer Jankowski suggested there be a review of the area requesting the lighting by the <br />Public Works Committee. The lighting should include a reasonable boundary. <br /> <br />Councilmember Cook commented much of the cost of the lighting installation is installing the <br />cable. He inquired if the City will be considering the use of solar powered lights in remote areas. <br /> <br />Assistant Public Works Director Olson replied Connexus is located in their community, so in <br />most places if someone requests a street light there is electricity available. The City has a good <br />relationship with Connexus right now, which includes bulb replacements whenever they are <br />necessary. <br /> <br />Councilmember Cook noted the need to be aware of light pollution, which is a concem of some <br />residents. <br /> <br />Public Works Committee / January 17, 2006 <br /> Page 4 of 14 <br /> <br /> <br />
