HOUSE NUMBERS

.

Imagine you are home alone and your child starts choking or quites breathing.
What would you do? Call the police, ambulance? Sure. But then your child
starts turning blue and you get scared. Where are the police? What's taking
them so long? THis type of medical emergency may not happen to you, but if
it did ask yourself one question -- Do I have ~ house numbers on and are they
visible from the street? The above incident did actually happen and the
police were delayed by searching the area for a house number. Out of five
houses on the block, only one had house numbers that were clearly visible
from the street. The outcome had a happy ending, the child started breathing
on his own before the police arrived. But, if the child had not started
breathing again, it might have been fatal. The brain can die- in four to six
minutes without oxygen.

We urge all residents to place house numberson~heir house so they are
clearly visible from the street. Have the numbers at least 6" tall and of
a reflectorized material and preferably not on the garage door as they can-
not be seen when the door is up. We also urge residents to place the num-
bers on the house even though they have them on their mailbox. Sometimes
the numbers are hard to read on a mailbox, especially if there are two or
more in a row.

.

The Ramsey City Ordinance request house numbers on all residences, but we
realize there may be circumstances when you don't have the numbers on for a
good reason, such as painting or remodeling.

But for your own protection and that 9f your family, make sure your house
numbers are on and clearly visible from the street.

Ramsey Police Department
