Park and Recreation Commission 5. 1.
Meeting Date: 02/09/2023
By: Mark Riverblood, Engineering/Public Works
Information
Title:
Disc Golf Course —a Proposed 2023 Capital Improvement Plan Project
Purpose/Background:
Over the past few years, several residents have made requests for a disc golf course in Ramsey. Recently, the
Park & Recreation Commission added a project into the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) to explore further,
as an amenity that would diversify recreational opportunities in the community, and as a capital improvement
with relatively low operation and maintenance costs.
As the attached CIP worksheet details, the project might consist of two elements - the first identifying a suitable
park location, and then developing the design and scope of the course (e.g. 9- hole versus 18-hole). The second
aspect would be the physical preparation of the site (to include clearing, grubbing, grading and landscape
restoration), and the purchase and installation of the 'cages' or holes within the course.
Notification:
City Council conducts a Public Hearing on city-wide CIP annually
Observations/Alternatives:
In preliminary work on this proposed project, staff identified disc golf courses in the area (some of which are
shown within the second exhibit), finding that there is a course in Nowthen a few miles to the northwest of
Ramsey, one in Anoka less than two miles to the southeast, and another in Elk River. Given the relatively close
availability of courses, both 9-hole and 18-hole, staff is recommending that no further work on this project occur
at this time, and the Commission may consider that the CIP worksheet be eliminated for next year.
Funding Source:
Recommendation:
Staff recommends no further work be performed on the aforementioned project.
Action:
By motion or consensus, acknowledge that staff will not be working on the proposed disc golf course at this time.
Or, motion of other.
CIP worksheet
Area Disc Golf Courses
Attachments
Form Review
Inbox Reviewed By Date
Bruce Westby Bruce Westby 02/02/2023 01:17 PM
