CHAPTER
PRESIDENT'S
REPORT

You are receiving this newsletter just a few days before the annual meeting.
At that time I will be stepping down as President of your Upper Midwest
NAIOP Chapter, having served a two-year term. I am extremely pleased at
the progress this chapter has made during the past two years and also
during the two years previous to this when I was Program Committee
chairman.
NAIOP has become the most active and most interesting commercial real
estate trade organization in this area. You will find most of the active
people in this business at our meetings and on the many busy volunteer
committees that NAIOP has. Our organization has become a well-recognized

and highly thought of trade organization.

Each member has found it the best place to get an exchange
of information on this industry. Along with this information
exchange you have found it to be a way to meet most of the
people in this business and have also had a lot of fun doing
it. We all seem to truly enjoy getting up at 6:00 a.m., fight.
Ding the weather and the traffic to arrive at a 7:30 a.m. com-
mirtee meeting. Most of us have found that these committee
meetings start off with an exchange of information on "what
is going on" and then going into the business of the com-
mittee. Being an NAIOP committee member is a real privilege
and a great learning experience.

I have seefi this organization nearly triple in size and have
seen the breakfast meeting attendance rise from around 50
to an average that now exceeds 150.
We now have a Board of Directors comprised of people who
are in the upper circles of management of most of the impor-
tant commercial real estate companies in this area. We have
selected this important group of people to help us direct our
efforts in making this chapter one of the best in the nation.
A look at our company masthead should give this organiza-
tion a great degree of importance.
I have seen our treasury increase substantially. We now have
a war fund with which we can protect ourselves at the legis-
lative level before bills become law. These funds have enabled
the legislative committee to act and react on legislation
in a way that will protect our industry. You will fred our

The spectacular program and atten-
dance at the All Day Seminar on
March 24 was a great inspiration for
your incoming Program Committee in
kicking off a new program season in
April 21. Congratulations to Steve
Gage, Program Chairman, and each of
the 1980-81 Program Committee
members for an outstanding year of
service to NAIOP. Your efforts have
been invaluable to all of us.

legislative efforts to be even more effective as the years go
by.
We have hired Ed Harfington as our managing director and
ours is the only NAIOP chapter in the nation having a paid
administrator. Ed will help in organizing us into an even
better group as he becomes more familiar with us. You have
already seen many, many of his suggestions followed. We
feel that it is essential to have professional and lasting advice
for a trade organization to continue.
Many of you remember when we had no newsletter at all and
when our breakfast meetings were announced on a simple
photocopied flier. We now have a very professional, glossy
newsletter which, in addition to our membership, we also
send to the seven-county mayors, city managers, planners
and other persons influential in this industry. Our newsletter
is our message to the public that we are an important and
influential organization for our industry. We want the public
to know that when an NAIOP member develops a property,
it will be done ethically, in a timely fashion and in good
taste. We want the public to welcome NAIOP members as
developers in their communities.

In summary, I feel I am leaving this chapter in excellent
shape and that the chapter will continue to offer each of
you the best sen'ices that can be offered by a trade organiza-
tion. I wish to thank the membership and the many volun-
teers for helping me create this wonderful organization.
- Samuel S.
