Ms. Lasher reported that in certain
situations, such as the City's current situation with the Economic Development Coordinator's
resignation, increased duties and responsibilities were placed on the current intern that were
outside of her current assignment. Ms. Nelson reported that management would like flexibility
and discretion with regard to wages to address unforeseen or unusual circumstances.
Chairperson Dehen commented that with discretion comes a needed criteria for which to base an
increase. Councilmember McGlone asked if the increased wages would be returned to the
previous amount once the extra duties ceased. Ms. Nelson reported that in the past, interns
working for the City would likely move on to other opportunities before that would happen.
Councilmember McGlone inquired how often the City would hire the current intern for a regular
position. Ms. Nelson reported that we have had a couple of interns end up being hired as regular
employees, but most move on to other positions outside of the City. Councilmember McGlone
asked how much the city would pay a temp agency. Ms. Lasher responded that the amount would
likely be significantly more, but she could do some checking. Councilmember Jeffrey reported
that his employer pays $15.00 per hour just for a receptionist to answer the phone, which is far
less rigorous than the type of work that our interns do. All members agreed to the following:
recommend that the City Council authorize a formal three step intern wage scale as follows with
earlier wage increases being brought forward to the Personnel Committee for consideration and
subsequent recommendation to the City Council.
Starting wage
After 1-year
After 2-years
$12.00 per hour
$13.00 per hour
$14.00 per hour
Motion by Chairperson Dehen, seconded by Councilmember Jeffrey to recommend that the City
Council adopt the resolution approving the Authorization to Establish a Three Step Intern Wage
Scale with earlier wage increases being brought forward to Personnel Committee for
consideration and subsequent recommendation to the City Council.
Motion carried.
