UPDATE ON TRAIL LIGHTING DISCUSSION
By: Leonard Linton, Civil Engineer

CASE

Background:

The Public Works Committee discussed subdivision lighting at the January 2006 meeting. The
discussion widened to include trail lighting. The trail lighting question was referred to the Park
and Recreation Commission, they reviewed the matter at their March 2006 meeting. The
benefits of lighted trails to users were weighed against the impact on adjacent property owners.
Their comments are summarized below:

· Concentrate on finishing trail links at this time.
· Consider lighting transportation routes (Bunker Lake Boulevard, Sunwood, etc) in the
future as routes are finished.
· No lighting of trails at this time, possible exception, Mid Block trail crossings.
· Look at solar lighting options. Mark reviewed City history with solar to this point. Solar
systems tried to this point have not been durable in a public setting.

Staff Recommendation:

Staff recommends the appropriate part of the Park and Recreation Commission comments be
included in the Street Lighting Policy when it is developed.

Commission Action:

Based upon discussion.

Reviewed by:
Director of Public Works/Principal Engineer

PW: 3/21/06

-279-
