CASE # 4

Summary of Firewise Program
By: Bruce Bacon, Environmental Specialist

Background:

During theMarch 6,2006 EPBmeeting, Staffwas directed to place the Firewise Program onthe
April agenda.

Observations:

The City Council responded to a neighborhood request for help with continually dying Scots
Pine. The Fire Chief sought assistance from Community Development Dept seeking a DNR
FIREWISE grant. Fifteen 5 acre lots and one park in 80 acre Traprock subdivision received an
early award. Two years preparation and implementation resulted in 14/16 participation, and
successful outcome, with very little cost beyond my time.

There are other at-risk properties located in and adjacent to relatively dense remnant pine
plantations that may be suitable candidates for this type of program.

Recommendation:

NA

EPB Action

This is for informational purposes only. No action is required.

EPB: 4/3/06
