Case #5: Geocache Review

Civil Engineer II Linton noted staff was asked to investigate the potential for geocaching in
Ramsey. Geocaching involves placing an object in a public location then posting hints on how to
find the object on a website. The hints include coordinates to enter into personal GPS units and a
general description of the area. The object of this activity is to locate the cache, enter your name
in the log in the cache if one is provided and replace the cache for others to find.

Chairperson Johns stated what she has found online is that these cache are placed haphazardly
around. She thought if they were to do this in the City, they would need to promote it.

Parks/Utilities Supervisor Riverblood stated they will need to monitor the cache because it can
get out of hand and inappropriate items could be placed in the cache.

Chairperson Johns thought if they were to allow this, the owner of the cache would need to take
some responsibility to control it.

Commissioner LaMere stated in addition to a policy, they may want to check out at a way to
advertise through the website the trail heads or the parks in the City for GPS tracking.

Chairperson Johns did not think there is a huge rush to do this and she would like to see what
Anoka County is going to do and she thought they could find out what their policy will be
regarding this.

Commissioner Lehman wondered if they could have a representative from the Geocaching
Association come in to discuss this further.

Parks/Utilities Supervisor Riverblood thought that may be a good idea. They could make a
presentation at a Park Meeting that is held in one of the parks.

COMMISSION/STAFF INPUT

· Update Commissioner's Home and E-Mail Addresses and Telephone Numbers

· Environmental Expo Schedule

Civil Engineer II Linton stated the Expo will be April 29, 2006.
