FC CASE

AUTHORIZE ADVERTIZING FOR BIDS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF TENNIS
COURTS FOR CENTRAL PARK
By: Mark Boos, Parks/Utilities Supervisor

Background:

As the Finance Committee may recall, City Council appropriated $63,000 in Landfill Trust Fund
interest earnings in 1998 for tennis courts at Central Park. This project did not occur, however,
due to the proposed fire station siting in this same location. Since this comer is now
unencumbered, the Park Commission approved the tennis court plan and specifications at their
January 14th meeting and recommended requesting bids on the courts noting that any monies
under the $63,000 may be directed to landscaping and a connecting path to the courts. The Park
and Recreation Commission also was in agreement that a court-lighting cost estimate be
requested from the bidders, in that these vendors may have plans and recent experience in
lighting courts. Lighting the courts could then be evaluated when the Commission reviews the
five-year Capital Improvement Program later this summer.

Advertising for bids now could provide for the receipt of the bids early in March and possible
court completion as early as the community picnic in June 1999.

Attached for your review is the site map and tennis court specification drawings.

Staff recommends advertising for bids to be received for Council action at the first meeting in
March. Unless Council directs otherwise, the bidding process will provide for the receipt of a
quotation for a design built lighting system for the courts.

Committee Action:

Motion to recommend City Council authorize staff to advertise for bids for the provision of four
tennis courts for Central Park.

Reviewed by:

Parks/utilities Supervisor
Director of Public Works
City Administrator
City Engineer

FC: 01/20/99

Copies also distributed to:
Finance Officer

pam/tennisbids
