CC Regular Session Meeting Date: 09/12/2023 Primary Strategic Plan Initiative: Not Applicable Information Title Authorization to Hire a Paid -on -call Firefighter Purpose/Background: 5. 7. The purpose of this case is to authorize hiring a Paid -on -call Firefighter. On June 12, 2023, the City received a letter of retirement from Mr. Jason Derosa. Mr. Derosa served on the Ramsey Fire Department for over nine years. Shortly after that, the city was contacted by an experienced firefighter, Mr. Andrew Ohlendorf, who had recently moved to Ramsey. Mr. Ohlendorf has already completed the following credentials: HFPA 1001 Firefighter I, NFPA 1001 Firefighter II, NPPA 1072 Haz-Mat Operations, Emergency Medical Technician Certification, Firefighters Advanced Driving Skills course through the Minnesota Highway Safety & Research Center, and more. As such, staff saw a benefit in vetting this candidate through the City's normal hiring process (with the exception of a posted recruitment). At this time, Mr. Andrew Ohlendorf has successfully completed the following pre -employment requirements for becoming a Paid -on -call Firefighter with the City of Ramsey: Application, interview, physical agility test, background check, reference check, psychological assessment and the medical exam / drug screen. Pending Council approval, Mr. Ohlendorf would be hired at the normal starting hourly wage of $12.88 per hour and would begin employment on September 13, 2023. Mr. Ohlendorf would be subject to the normal one-year probationary period and subject to Fire Department policies and the City's Personnel Policy. Funding Source: The funding required to fill this position is included within the approved 2023 budget. Recommendation: Staff recommends hiring Mr. Andrew Ohlendorf as a Paid -on -call Firefighter at $12.88 per hour, effective September 13, 2023.
