5. 5. <br /> CC Regular Session <br /> Meeting Date: 01/23/2024 <br /> Primary Strategic Plan Initiative: Strive for high organizational morale and employee retention <br /> Information <br /> Title <br /> Authorization to Hire Paid-on-call Firefighters <br /> Purpose/Background: <br /> The purpose of this case is to request authorization to hire Paid-on-call Firefighters in order to bring both Fire <br /> stations to within acceptable staffing levels. <br /> A firefighter recruitment was conducted, followed by interviews,background checks,reference checks,physical <br /> agility tests,work-style assessments,pre-employment physicals and drug screens. At this time,two candidates <br /> have successfully passed the requirements to become City of Ramsey Paid-on-call Firefighters. Staff is <br /> recommending Mr. Tyler Evenson and Mr. Timothy Waaraniemi be hired as Paid-on-call Firefighters. With the <br /> City Council's authorization,they will become the City's newest members of the Fire Department. All new <br /> members are subject to a one-year probationary period. <br /> Paid-on-call Firefighters work under the general supervision of an officer to perform the following duties: <br /> •Respond to emergency incidents within their assigned station, meeting minimum participation requirements <br /> •Perform firefighting activities in accordance with NFPA Standards, including driving fire apparatus, <br /> operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose,performing suppression, ventilation and overhaul tasks <br /> •Perform activities related to technical rescue, emergency medical services and hazardous materials response <br /> •Participate in required weekly training drills, department meetings, community activities and other required <br /> training activities and meet minimum participation and competency verification requirements <br /> •Participate in the general maintenance of department facilities and equipment in accordance with <br /> department procedures, such as clean and wash station facilities and equipment; care for grounds around <br /> station; wash, hang and dry hoses;wash, clean, inspect and maintain apparatus and equipment <br /> •Participate in presentations of department programs and activities related to safety, medical and fire <br /> prevention topics <br /> •Provide a wide range of tasks at the verbal or written direction of the Fire Chief or their designee <br /> Funding Source: <br /> The funding to hire the above mentioned firefighters is included in the 2024 budget. <br /> Recommendation: <br /> Staff recommends hiring Mr. Tyler Evenson and Timothy Waaraniemi at$13.65 per hour, effective on/near <br /> Wednesday, January 24, 2024. <br /> Action: <br /> Motion to hire Mr. Tyler Evenson and Timothy Waaraniemi at$13.65 per hour, effective on/near Wednesday, <br /> January 24, 2024. <br />
