6) Fire Station #2

Councilmember Hendriksen stated that the more he thinks about the curved roof on the new fire
station the less he is in favor of it.

Mayor Gamec questioned as to what was discussed at the meeting with the architect that
Councilmember Hendriksen was invited to attend.

Councilmember Hendriksen replied that he was not able to attend the meeting.

Fire Chief Kapler explained that the cost for a curved roof rather than a flat roof would be an
additional $20,000.

Councilmember Hendriksen stated that the $20,000 is probably a conservative estimate and there
would be extra costs with an expansion.

Fire Chief Kapler noted that a decision needs to be made soon because the project needs to be bid
in January.

Mayor Gamec stated that a round roof is better for maintenance and with all of the trouble that he
is hearing in regards to flat roofs in Minnesota he would be in favor of a rounded or peaked roof.

Councilmember Connolly replied that the technologies with a flat roof have improved over the
years and she thinks the issue should be researched further.

Councilmember Hendriksen stated that it is not likely that there will be an addition to City Hall
in the near future so it will probably become necessary to have some Staff at the site.

Councilmember Anderson inquired if the building should be larger than what has been proposed.

City Administrator Norman noted that he would argue against separating Staff on a long term
basis. Eventually they will need to expand City Hall and money should not be spent to increase
the size of the fire station.

Councihnember Hendriksen replied that the City cannot afford to build a City Hail and a fire
station in one year.

Mayor Gamec suggested that Councilmember Hendriksen and Fire Chief Kapler meet to discuss
the roof and expansion issues and bring it back to a future Council meeting.

Councilmember Hendriksen stated that he would like to know if 10 Staff members were
relocated to the fire station, where would they be placed and what would the cost implications be.

Fire Chief Kapler noted that he would suggest moving engineering into the fire station.

City Council/November 9, 1999
