CASE

CONSIDER PLACEMENT OF PARK LOCATION SIGNS
By: Leonard Liuton, Civil Engineer

Introduction:

Staffhas received several requests for placing directional signs to our City parks. One request
listed several locations for placement of the signs. The rationale for placement of signs is the use
of our parks by traveling soccer teams, teams fi.om other Cities are coming to Ramsey for games
and finding our parks can be difficult since several of them are not on major streets.

Background:

Several years ago there was a CIP item for placing signs directing users to the parks. This item
was not completed at that time and was subsequently replaced by other priorities. The City
recently took delivery ora sign making machine. Staff estimates that the material cost for a 12"
x 18" sign is $20.00. There will be staff time required for producing and placing the signs. An
example is attached showing a right arrow. These signs would be placed approximately 1 block
before the turn to the park. These signs could be produced and distributed in conjunction with
placement of other signs in the area.

Signs for the larger parks like Central would include the park name and a distance and for the
Central Park example would be placed on Armstrong Boulevard north of Bunker Lake
Boulevard. These signs would be used to direct users to the high destination parks including
Rivers Bend, Elmcrest, Emerald Pond, Alpine, Central and the Lake Itasca Trailheads. These
signs will cost more to produce and may require new posts.

Staff Recommendation:

Staff recommends producing some small park directional signs when making other needed signs
and deploying them when doing work in the area of parks. Some signs are in place for Elmcrest
and Central Parks.

Committee Action:

Motion to approve fabrication and placement of location signs for parks.

Reviewed by:
Director of Public Works/Principal Engineer

PW: 6/20/06

13
