Councilmember Zimmerman introduced the following resolution and moved for its adoption: RESOLUTION //95-02-047 RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING APRIL 29, 1995 AS "ARBOR DAY" AND THE MONTH OF MAY 1995 AS "ARBOR MONTH" WHEREAS, Minnesota's forest treasures were a significant resource to indigenous Americans and early settlers and commerce because of their usefulness and their prominent role in the landscape; and WHEREAS, trees are an increasingly vital source in Minnesota today, enriching our lives by purifying air and water, helping conserve soil and providing local energy, creating jobs through a large forest products industry, serving as beautiful recreational settings, providing habitat for wildlife of all kinds, making our cities more liveable and are related to all aspects of a healthy, sustainable diverse ecosystem; and WHEREAS, human activities such as construction damage and pollution, as well as disease and insects, threaten our trees, creating the need for concerted action to ensure the future of urban and rural forests in our state, country and world by locally planting, nurturing, and protecting trees for benefit of citizens, economy, and ecology; and WHEREAS, each year, the last week in April - "Arbor Day" - and the month of May, the people of Minnesota pay special attention to the wonderful treasure that our trees represent and dedicate themselves to the continued health of our state's urban and rural forests; and WHEREAS, Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world and the City of Ramsey has been recognized for a sixth year as a Tree City, USA. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RAMSEY, ANOKA COUNTY, STATE OF MINNESOTA, as follows: 1) That the Ramsey City Council hereby proclaims April 29, 1995 as "Arbor Day". 2) That the Ramsey City Council hereby proclaims the month of May 1995 as "Arbor Month". 3) That the Ramsey City Council urges all citizens to become more aware of the importance of trees to their well-being, to participate in tree planting programs that will ensure a green Minnesota in decades to come and to plant, nurture, protect and steward the use of Minnesota's treasure of tree resources. The motion for the adoption of the foregoing resolution was duly seconded by Councilmember Beyer and upon vote being taken thereon, the following voted in favor thereof: Mayor Hardin Councilmember Zimmerman Councilmember Beyer Councilmember Beahen Councilmember Peterson and the following voted against the same: None RESOLUTION #95-02-047 Page I of 2
