Councilmember Hendriksen introduced the following resolution and moved for its adoption: <br /> <br />RESOLUTION #99-02-043 <br /> <br />RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING APRIL 24, 1999 AS "ARBOR DAY" AND THE <br />MONTH OF MAY 1999 AS "ARBOR MONTH" <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Minnesota's forest treasures were a bountiful resource to early settlers and <br />commerce because of their usefulness and their prominent place in the landscape; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, trees are an increasingly vital resource in Minnesota today, enriching our <br />lives by purifying air and water, helping conserve soil and providing local energy, creating jobs <br />through a large forest products industry, serving as beautiful recreational settings, providing <br />habitat for wildlife of all kinds, making our cities more livable and are related to all aspects of a <br />diverse, healthy, sustainable ecosystem; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, human activities such as construction damage and pollution, as well as <br />disease and insects, threaten our trees creating the need for concerted action to ensure the future <br />of urban and rural forests in our county, state, and country by locally planting, nurturing and <br />protecting trees for benefit of citizens, economy and ecology; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the City of Ramsey for the 24th year again sponsors a tree sale for its <br />residents and in partnership with Ramsey Elementary School an Environmental Fair; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world and the <br />City of Ramsey is recognized for a tenth year as a Tree City, USA. <br /> <br />NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF <br />RAMSEY, ANOKA COUNTY, STATE OF MINNESOTA, as follows: <br /> <br />1) <br />2) <br />3) <br /> <br />4) <br /> <br />5) <br /> <br />That the Ramsey City Council hereby proclaims April 24, 1999 as "Arbor Day". <br />That the Ramsey City Council hereby proclaims the month of May as "Arbor Month". <br />That the Ramsey City Council urges all citizens to plant trees as part of Ramsey's living <br />history, to participate in tree planting programs that will ensure a green Ramsey in <br />decades to come, and to plant, nurture, protect, and steward the use of Minnesota's native <br />tree resources. <br />That the Ramsey City Council urges participation in Ramsey's tree sale and <br />Environmental Fair, Recycling Day, and the Pet Vaccination Clinic on Saturday, April, <br />24, 1999. <br />That the Ramsey City Council notes that neighboring communities of Ramsey (Anoka <br />County), Elk River (Sherbume County Tree Board), and Dayton (Hennepin County), the <br />Minnesota Historical Society, Minnesota Extension Service, Minnesota Department of <br />Natural Resources and Citizens efforts combined for a family Arbor Day "Planting <br />Living History" on Sunday, May 2, 1999 from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. at the historic <br />Oliver Kelley Farm on Highway #10 in Elk River. <br /> <br /> <br />
