CITY COUNCIL WORK SESSION
Topic Report: Animal Containment Facility
By: Jim Way, Chief of Police

Background:

The City currently houses dogs that have been impounded by our police department at the
City of Anoka Pound. Weare allotted three slots at their facility and a fourth for
emergencies only. When all of these spots are taken, we are forced to request
homeowners to contain strays and/or allow these animals to continue to run at large. We
currently have no facility for cats.

Staff would like to explore alternatives to the Anoka facility, including creating a facility
that can be utilized by neighboring communities.

We have started communications with Elk River on the feasibility of building a joint
impound facility.

Action Statement:

Staff is requesting that council discuss an alternative animal containment facility.
