SECTION 2 - INSPECTION AND MAINrENANCE

2.01

SEWER PIPE AND MANHOLES

Sewer pipe

The most common sewer problems are stoppages and excessive

infiltration. If a stoppage occurs, it can be located by inspecting

manholes for excessive water levels. It is recommended that a power

rodder, bucket machine or high pressure hydraulic jetting machine be

used for removing stoppages. If the jetting machine is used, the

nozzle should be inserted into the sewer at a manhole downstream from

the stoppage.

A preventive maintenance program which includes yearly flushing or
cleaning of sewers is effective in preventing stoppages fromoccuring.
A high pressure hydraulic jetting machine can perform this job
effectively. If cleaning equipment cannot remove a stoppage or if
major line failure has caused the stoppage, excavation will be
necessary to make repairs. Contractor shall be responsible for any
pumping required during unplugging or repair work. The sewage shall
be pumped to the next downstream manhole du~ing repair of the plugged
section. The p~ope~ty owne~ is responsible for the maintenance of the
service pipe from the main to the house or buildin~~s of the end of
1987 there are approximately I'~O connections to the sewer system.

It is essential that all manhole covers be kept securely in place.

This is important both for public safety and the elimination of

surface runoff and extraneous materials that may enter the system and

create stoppages or excessive flow.

5

13
