CASE #2

RECAP OF BUSINESS APPRECIATION DAY
By: James D. Gromberg, Economic Development Coordinator

Background:

The ninth annual Business Appreciation Day was conducted on August 20, 1997, at the Rum
River Hills Golf Course and McDuffs Restaurant. The event was attended by over 35 teams
(140 people) with about 147 people attending the dinner. This makes the event one ofthe largest
ever! The event appears to have developed a pattern of filling up prior to the actual date of the
event. Based upon past experience, the tournament fills up even faster when the event is held at
The Links of North fork, which is the expected location for the 1998 event.

The continued acceptance and popularity of the Business Appreciation Day has reduced the
amount of work required to make it a success. However, as the Commission is aware,
conducting the event at The Links is more expensive and will require that we spend additional
time in tracking down and acquiring door prizes for the event. We may want to begin this
activity earlier in the season than just three to four weeks prior to the event.

Another issue that is becoming somewhat problematic is allowing teams to pay at the door. The
main concern lies in keeping track of which team the payments belong to and how to handle
issues of reserved teams that fail to arrive at the event as the cost of the carts, dinner and golf
have to absorbed by the event reducing the overall profitability. The Commission should
develop a policy for institution with next year's event.

As those of you who attended the event are aware, the induction to the Ramsey Business Hall of
Fame did not occur. This portion of the event was removed as Mrs. Stoltz was unable to attend.
I will be scheduling the induction at a future City Council meeting to allow for her attendance
and acceptance. When the date is finalized, I will advise the Commissionmembers of the time
and date so that they may attend should they choose to do so.

Commission Action:

No direct action is required, however, the Commission should discuss how to handle proposed
changes for the 1998 Business Appreciation Day Event.

Reviewed by:

Economic Development Coordinator
City Administrator

EDC: 09/04/97

@jo

.3
