CASE # 3

Consideration of Implementing a Tree Bank
By: Chris Anderson, Zoning & Recycling Coordinator

Background:

City Code contains planting standards for all proposed developments, whether it is single family
homes or a large industrial development. Occasionally, the required plantings cannot be properly
spaced on a site to maintain necessary growing space. In these instances, the number of required
plantings may be reduced rather than require plantings that would overcrowd one another.

Observations:

An alternative option to consider is implementing a tree banle In cases where required plantings
may not fit on a site, the City could collect a set dollar amount per tree that could be utilized to
fund plantings elsewhere. Ultimately, the goal would be to ensure that trees are installed,
whether on a specific site, or somewhere within the vicinity, to capture the many benefits trees
provide.

Staff is in the process of contacting other communities regarding the tree bank concept and will
summarize the findings for the EPB at a subsequent meeting.

EPB Action

This is for informational purposes only, no action is necessary.

EPB: 9/11/06
