Figure 7 A is the additional alternative resulting from an informal discussion between city staff and the consultants. Fh~ure 1: TH 47rrhurston Ave. This scenario proposes that the segment of Thurston Ave. located in the city of Anoka be realigned and extended east. A new Thurston/CR 116 intersection would be built approximately 500 feet west of the existing intersection ofCR 116 and TH 47. Thurston Ave. would be routed around the east side of the wetland and extended north to intersect with TH 47 in the vicinity of142nd Avenue. Thus, TH 47 would connect to Highway 10 via Thurston Ave. (with a grade-separated crossing of the railroad tracks), which would help alleviate the traffic congestion through the City of Anoka. If Thurston Ave. were to become the major transportation route, it would most likely be designated TH 47. The existing TH 47 south ofCR 116 in the City of Anoka would be 'turnbacked"by the State of Minnesota and become a local collector roadway. Access to the existing commercial/retail structures at the present CR 116!TH 47 intersection would be maintained. Land use surrounding the CR 116!TH 47 intersection is proposed to remain consistent with a Community Commercial designation. The Community Commercial acreage will be expanded up the east side ofTH 47, approximately to the intersection with Nowthen Blvd. Additional transportation improvements are proposed at this intersection. The opportunity to establish clear delineation between residential and commercial land use should be considered. The historic town hall could be relocated, and the potential for a city center district evaluated. Another possibility is a pedestrian bridge over TH 47--to provide the residential area on the west with unimpeded access to the commercial area and park on the east side.
